Regular readers of this site know my opinion about computers counting elections. But so that my position is clear to all new readers I'll make it simple. The only condition under which I would even think of giving any credibility to an election of any type that was counted on a computer would be with a manual validation of the results immediately after the election of a sufficient quantity of randomly chosen voted paper ballots (which eliminates touchscreen voting all together) to determine the accuracy of the computer reported results. I could get more detailed but it really isn't that difficult. Arizona just passed emergency legislation for the 2006 election addressing this very issue. But I had to sue to get them to even pretend to implement the law while I was running for Secretary of State to bring attention to this issue, and there are still lawsuits pending in Arizona that will have many election officials having to stay after school when it is all over.

I know all of the bullet points given to those on the front lines by the puppet masters and I can tell when I am being bullshitted just like most Americans can. For days I have been following up on leads given me by election integrity activists and GOP activists her in Iowa that have been directed to me on this issue or I to them.

As things stand today, about 60 citizen camera crews and about 200 citizen volunteers are needed to conduct a “citizens’ exit poll” to double check the easily rigged Diebold electronic voting machines which the Iowa GOP intends to use to “count” the vote at the Ames, Iowa Straw Poll on August 11, 2007 – just a week from now.

If you can possibly attend and/or donate to help with this “citizens’ exit poll” – see the action items at the end of this update – but first:

Next Saturday, from 10 am to 6 pm, more than 25,000 residents of the State of Iowa will arrive on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames. They will be 18 years of age or older. Bowen's decision throws counties into confusion

County registrars warned Saturday of chaos before the February presidential primary after Secretary of State Debra Bowen's curtailment of electronic voting in California, and they said it may be impossible for counties and manufacturers to comply with her orders in time.

Across California, bleary-eyed voting watchdogs, registrars and public officials spent the day trying to digest Bowen's late Friday decision to limit electronic balloting and install various new safeguards.

The former Democratic state senator, an electronic voting skeptic who fought in the Legislature to require a paper trail for digital ballots, installed across-the-board changes after University of California researchers found security flaws in three electronic systems. Read more here.

New York Times 7/28/07 - “Computer scientists from California universities have hacked into three electronic voting systems used in California and elsewhere in the nation and found several ways in which vote totals could potentially be altered, according to reports released yesterday by the state.”

United Press International 7/28/07 - “. . . computer experts . . . found several ways to change the vote totals by breaking the codes to Diebold Election Systems . . . the New York Times reported Saturday.”

The Iowa GOP is using discredited Diebold computers to “count” your vote today. After you vote on the Diebold computer being used in today’s Iowa Straw Poll, and had your thumb dipped in indelible ink, make sure that your vote counts.

“How?” you ask. Simply look for one of our clerks in a “Vote in Sunshine” yellow t-shirt, or come to our tent* in Smith Park across the street from the Hilton Coliseum where you will be able to verify – and preserve – your vote by signing a verification card and affidavit.

Then, at 6:00 pm at our tent, all of the verification cards and affidavits will be counted in public view, where you will be a witness to an open count!  The results will be announced just after 7:00 pm at the tent.*
